Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?

No. We are a cash-pay practice. This means no prior authorizations, no denials, and no surprise bills. You pay when you book. Superbills available by request.

How do I know if I need an iron infusion?

Common symptoms of iron deficiency include persistent fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, shortness of breath during activities that did not used to wind you, poor sleep, cold hands and feet, hair shedding, and restless legs at night. If you have been feeling off and cannot explain it — get your ferritin checked. Standard lab reference ranges are outdated, and many patients with significant symptoms have ferritin levels their lab report still marks as normal. If your ferritin is below 75 and you have symptoms, it is worth a conversation.

How long does an infusion take?

It depends on the product and your dose. Venofer sessions typically run 30 to 60 minutes, plus a 30-minute observation period. Ferraheme and Injectafer infusions take approximately 15 minutes, plus 30 minutes of monitoring. Wellness drips vary – Niagen® takes 30 to 45 minutes, Myers Cocktail approximately 30 minutes. Plan for the infusion time plus at least 30 extra minutes for setup and monitoring.

What if I'm scared of needles/blood?

Don’t worry, we get it. That’s a very common fear and we will hold your hand through the process. Just let our team know your’e needle-phobic and we will try our best to work some magic 🙂 You can also put on our VR headset for even more distraction.

Is it safe?

Yes — when administered in a properly equipped clinical setting by trained staff. IV iron carries a small but real risk of hypersensitivity or anaphylactic reaction — which is why we have a crash cart, emergency medications, and anaphylaxis protocols on site, and why we monitor every patient for at least 30 minutes after their infusion. Safety is non-negotiable at The Fern.

For those who have hypersensitivities/MCAS we will collaborate with your treatment team to make an appropriate pre-infusion protocol.

What happens if I have a reaction?

In the rare event of a reaction, our nursing team is trained to respond immediately. We have epinephrine, diphenhydramine, methylprednisolone, and IV saline on hand at all times, along with a crash cart and emergency protocols. We will stabilize you on site and call emergency services if needed.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No. You can self-refer. Self-referred patients begin with an integrative assessment with our NP — a review of your symptoms, medical history, and recent labs — before your infusion is ordered. This ensures your infusion is clinically appropriate and safe. If you have a referral from your physician, simply bring it along with your recent labs and we will get you scheduled directly.

What is Niagen® and who is it for?

Niagen® is a patented form of vitamin B3 that your cells convert into NAD+, the coenzyme behind energy production, DNA repair, and healthy aging. Early research suggests a Niagen IV raises NAD+ with a shorter infusion and fewer side effects than a traditional NAD+ IV. It may be a good fit for adults with persistent fatigue or brain fog, or those interested in longevity.

How is this different from a drip bar?

We are a physician-led medical practice — not a wellness bar. Every infusion we administer is ordered by a licensed physician or NP based on clinical assessment. We carry a crash cart and emergency medications. Our nurses are registered nurses, not medical assistants. Drip bars offer saline, vitamins, and glutathione. We offer all of that, plus medically supervised iron infusions, clinical protocols, lab draws, and physician oversight. We are held to a different standard — and we hold ourselves to one too.

Can teenagers get iron infusions?

Yes. Iron deficiency is extremely common in teenage girls — particularly those with heavy periods and diet patterns that include very little iron-rich food. We see teenage patients and treat them with the same clinical care and compassion as our adult patients. We coordinate with parents and pediatricians throughout the process.

Do you treat men?

Yes. Iron deficiency in men is less common but does occur — particularly in endurance athletes, men with GI conditions, and post-surgical patients. Our full wellness menu is appropriate for anyone regardless of gender.

What is the Myers' Cocktail?

The Myers’ Cocktail is an IV infusion combining magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C — developed by physician John Myers and widely used in integrative medicine for decades. It is used for general wellness, fatigue, immune support, and recovery. Think of it as a comprehensive nutritional reset delivered directly into your bloodstream.

What is glutathione and what does it do?

Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant — produced in your liver and responsible for neutralizing free radicals, supporting detoxification, and protecting your cells from oxidative damage. IV glutathione is delivered as a push — it takes about two minutes and can be added to any infusion. Patients report brighter skin, improved energy, and a general sense of feeling cleaner. It is one of our most popular add-ons.

How often should I get an infusion?

It depends entirely on what you are treating. For iron deficiency, the number of infusions required depends on your ferritin level, your rate of iron loss, and the product used — your physician will guide you. Some patients need a single infusion. Others need a series, or maintenance infusions every few months. For wellness drips like Myers, many patients start with a series of sessions and then maintain monthly or quarterly. We will work with you to find a schedule that makes sense for your goals.

What should I eat before my infusion?

Eat a normal meal before your appointment — do not come on an empty stomach. Stay well hydrated. Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to your arm. Avoid heavy exercise immediately before your infusion. Bring something to do — a book, your laptop, headphones — and plan to relax for the duration of your appointment.
